Character: Alys Brangwin
Canon: Phantasy Star IV
Version: video game for the Sega Genesis
Canon Point: I’ll be pulling Alys from the point that she’s reached the top of Zio’s Fortress, before rescuing Demi, ergo, pre-death via Black Wave
Age: Alys’ age isn’t specified in game, but we can deduce that she’s in her late 20s by her appearance, so 29
Gender: Female

History: Pre-game history –
Alys was born on the planet Motavia in the Algol solar system, a desolate planet with a desert-like climate. Her parents were successful merchants, who often traveled between towns and villages peddling their wares, as sometimes supplies were hard to come by. When she was 14 years old and traveling with her parents, the family was assaulted by highwaymen intent on robbing the merchants blind. Her parents resisted and were cut down by the bandits while Alys watched. Before they could murder the girl, Alys was rescued by Galf, a traveling Hunter (or mercenary, specializing in monster extermination). Rather than accept being sent off to an orphanage, Alys asked Galf to make her his apprentice and train her to be a Hunter too, so that she could stop other people from being victimized as she’d been. Galf took pity upon the girl and accepted.

Alys was a bright student who quickly learned the art of the trade, becoming a valuable asset to Galf in his missions. After her first year under Galf’s wing, the two hunters encountered a young man named Rune Walsh. Rune was traveling alone and seeking information on the state of Motavia, though he wouldn’t explain exactly what he was looking for or why. He requested to join the Hunters in their travels and Galf agreed to his request, as Rune, though not a physically gifted fighter, possessed a strange art unseen on Motavia, which the youth simply coined as “magic.” The three traveled together for four years and Alys grew a genuine affection for Rune, despite their constant butting of heads. They shared a similar no-nonsense attitude and habit for cunning observation and quick thinking on their feet… and a driving need to outdo the other in most things. The two grew up together, overcoming trials and meeting many people on Motavia, including Grandfather Dorin, the information monger, who was so enchanted by Alys’ physical beauty and attitude that he began listing her measurements amongst his most treasured information, much to Alys’ chagrin. (And Rune’s delight.) Alys and Rune’s relationship became somewhat… complicated when the pair felt the urgings of romance (and hormones), however their fledgling relationship was quickly squashed by Galf when their elder learned of it… to Alys’ FUTHER chagrin.

After Alys turned 19 and was pronounced a full-fledged Hunter, Galf met his end as many a Hunter did, at the hands of a powerful monster. Alys buried her mentor and parted ways with Rune, who cited only that he had other matters that needed his attention. Hurt, although she wouldn’t EVER admit to it, Alys took this as a sign that she must be completely independent and not rely on others at all. She settled in the city of Aeido where the Hunters Guild was based and began her solo career. A hard worker who didn’t particularly enjoy an abundance of free time, Alys quickly rose in the Hunters’ ranks, taking on difficult and odd jobs that others overlooked or turned down. Few could deny her strength and prowess and she was dubbed with the title of “The Eight Stroke Warrior,” a moniker that served only to embarrass her, as she didn’t much care for prestige. (And it sounded ridiculous.)

It was while on a mission far away from Aeido that a boy ran into Alys and tried to pick her pocket. Ever money-minded, Alys caught the boy red-handed and attempted to scare him straight from a life of crime. The boy, named Chaz, confessed that he had only tried to rob her because he was an orphan trying to survive on the streets. Alys sympathized, having been in his position once before, and offered him the same opportunity Galf had given her: to be her apprentice and earn an honest living. Chaz agreed and came to live with Alys, training to become a Hunter and learning swordsmanship. Despite the hardships he’d survived, Chaz lacked Alys’ hardened outlook on the world and though she rarely let it show, she developed a great affection for the boy, taking a great personal stake in his future, carefully (but strictly) developing his talent.
In-Game

Personality: The first impression Alys leaves people with is one of very competent professionalism. She addresses issues and concerns head on and directly, not mincing words or beating around the bush. When the generation tanks for biomonsters are found in the Piata Academy’s basement, she goes directly to the headmaster and grills him for information, then upon learning that there is a better source to answer her concerns, seeks them out. She is a person who gets things done, and takes great pride in her ability to resolve conflicts.
Her tendency to leave her past unspoken is one part professional attitude, wanting to be judged for what she can do rather than her background, and a larger part of her belief that it’s no one’s damn business but her own. It annoys her when people make assumptions about her capabilities, particularly if those misconceptions are based around her gender. She charges Hahn a fee to accompany her, mainly because upon hearing that a Hunter had been dispatched to deal with the trouble of the biomonsters infesting the academy’s basement, he assumed the Hunter that accepted the mission would be male and a stereotypical “man’s man.” This annoyed her, to put it lightly. In her eyes, his presence in the group was more of a hinderance than a help to her (clearly, he was an idiot, and a weakling, given that he lacked the confidence and strength to investigate the basement solo), and one more concern to deal with, and thus she should be compensated for the trouble. Alys is a firm believer in the philosophy that if there a matter that a person cannot deal with solo is so important that they request additional assistance, then compensation must be made. She worked hard to become the Hunter that she is and if hard work and perseverance can’t get you what you want, then expect to have to shell out some cash. Nothing important is ever easy and/or cheap.

Once you get to know Alys in a less than professional capacity, you’ll find that she is driven to perfection in all aspects of life. Anything worth doing in her eyes is worth doing perfectly, to the best of her ability. The people of Aeido gush over her ability to excel at anything she puts her mind to: anything. A neighbor comments that she LOVED a dish Alys cooked for her, and tells the party that she’s also great with kids and even poetry writing! (Alys is a woman of many talents, greatly varying.) And while she’s likely to charge a fee for her services, it isn’t always the case, if she likes you enough. Mito, the fortune teller of Aeido, thanks Alys for her help in the past and reads her fortune as thank. Obviously, Alys didn’t charge her friend. She is capable of being generous… just, not frequently. It might make her seem “soft” and feminine, and that just wouldn’t do in a male dominated field like the Hunters Guild.

She’s fond of children and adolescents, given her adoption of Chaz as her “apprentice” (although clearly, the relationship became more of a mother and son type, as Galf became a surrogate father to her when he took her as his charge). When the AI SEED requests that the group adopt Rika, the biological creation into their party, it’s Alys who accepts her, and very readily, gladly even. Rika is a child who has never had any contact with the world, and needs a guide, and Alys steps up to fill the role. Having been in the role of a child bereft of adult guidance, she sympathizes intensely and wants to help however she can. When SEED self-destructs, she tells Rika that she needs to keep walking forward, for SEED’s sake. She herself came to realize this when Galf died, and before she herself dies, imparts to Chaz that she realizes it is going to be difficult for him without her, but she wants him to persevere. ). Before dying, she says that Chaz was the greatest accomplishment she ever produced.

She loves a challenge! When the party learns that Zio is holding Demi, the last hope of the planet Motavia’s ability to stabilize their climate, Alys states that she’s excited at the premise of taking on such a challenging foe. She is a bit of an adrenaline junkie that way.

Fears: Simply put: Failure. After losing her family and then Galf and Rune, Alys established the majority of her personality around being a successful Hunter, more, an EXCELLENT one. Not only does being an excellent Hunter provide her with a plentiful income and self-esteem, but she is able to help out folk in distress who genuinely need assistance, a situation she once found herself in. Failing means letting people who need her down… and lessening her proficiency rating. Had Galf failed her, her life would have turned out far differently and definitely not as well as it did (much shorter too). She’s eternally grateful that he helped her in her time of need, and wants to provide a measure of assistance to the people on Motavia, a planet with a severe climate and many dangers.

Along that line, should Alys ever reinforce any neanderthol’s chavenistic beliefs, she would be so disappointed in herself she wouldn’t know how to handle it. There are still many people who view women as inferior to men and it MAKES HER UPSET. Though she’s had a long history of proving those people wrong, she still fears doing anything that might reinforce those beliefs. She fears being viewed as a “soft” woman, and will forever put up a tough, no-nonsense appearance.

Intimacy would be another fear, although less so than failure. A lot of important people have left her: her parents, Galf, and Rune (the only one who did so of his own free will, which made it harder than the others). Losing people is painful and not enjoyable and so she’s particularly selective of the people she lets into her personal life. These people are either highly capable and intelligent (people who don’t die easily) and children, who need guidance. Rune… he’s a special exception, for despite leaving her, she’s got a lot of personal history with. Though you’ll never pry it out of her, he was her first love. Stupid sexy Rune.

Weaknesses: Overconfidence. And oh, did that bite her in the rear. Before departing from the party, Rune specifically warns Alys and Chaz NOT to confront Zio, plainly stating that at their current levels, they’re no match for him. What does she do within a week of receiving such a warning? Enthusiastically volunteer the party to take Zio down when they go to his fortress to rescue Demi. She gets excited at the thought… oops. That didn’t work out so well, did it?

Alys can also be quite greedy. She bleeds Hahn for every meseta that he’s worth and is always on the lookout for more money generating quests. It’s a part of how she got to be the most proficient Hunter in the guild… but it tends to breed distrust amongst people. But hey, she’s skilled and if you want the best, you had better be prepared to shell out some dough! Nothing great is ever cheap. You get what you pay for, and Alys? Is worth the cash. (She vehemently believes. And has the mission completion rating to back that view up.)

Mothering instincts. While caring about people younger than she is isn’t necessarily a BAD thing, it DID lead to her death, so it must be mentioned. At heart, Alys is capable of caring for other people more than herself and thus behaving in ways that are detrimental to her own personal health. This has the possibility of being exploited.

And finally, Rune Walsh. The one guy she just can’t get out of her system. Sure, he can be kind of a jerk, and his attitude occasionally makes her want to strangle him sometimes, but he holds a special place in her heart and thus makes… allowances. Like letting him join the party without issue (unlike Hahn, who had to shell out some cash… repeatedly). Sure, he left her when she really needed some emotional support and he heckles her apprentice without mercy… But he’s intelligent and capable, and can look her in the eye and have a conversation without wimping out and running away, unlike some other Hunters in the Guild. He’s overconfident, but it sure as heck beats men who are wimps.(He’s also easy on the eyes… VERY easy on the eyes.) It bears repeating: Stupid. Sexy. Rune.

Mundane Strengths/Abilities: Alys specializes in projectile weapons, boomerangs and slashers (edged boomerangs) being her preference. She’s got a dynamite aim and dexterity, in-game being able to use two weapons at the same time and hit multiple enemies. She’s got an above average speed, regularly leading the party in attacking.

Sensitivity/Magical Ability: All of Alys’ techniques and skills are either attacks or status effect boosters. Offensively, she can use foi and zan techniques (fire and wind) and Vortex (which allows her to use a boomerang/slasher to circle an enemy three times) and Moonshade (in which she reflects a light source off of her weapon to blind an enemy). She has no heightened sensitivity to the paranormal at all.

Supply List: 1 Laser Slasher, 1 Titanium Slasher, Ceramic Mail, Carbon Crown, 5 X Dimate (medium strength healing item), 5 X Monomate (weak strength healing item), 2 X antidote

Sample RP post:
Alys indulged in a sigh. Laundry day. An applaudable measure, in theory. Goodness knows that Alys appreciated being able to be in a close proximity to another living being without her olfactory senses being attacked, and only slobs take no pride in their appearance. However. There’s something to be said for having spare clothing to change into while your uniform is being cleaned…

Alys realized that she was fairly statuesque. Her figure might very well be described as that of a super-model. So this… “one size fits MOST” robe that had been given to her… wasn’t working as well as she would enjoy. To adequately cover one area of her figure, another must be laid bare, it seems. And that? WAS. NOT. ACCEPTABLE. She was a Hunter, not a dancer in the Pao Pao strip club that so many of her male Hunter peers so adored. (Not that there was anything wrong with stripping for a living, heck, a girl has gotta earn a paycheck. It’s just not what ALYS had chosen to do with her life.)

Well, she supposed that it was time to put those problem solving abilities she’d been so often hired for back in Aeido to use. There had to be something else she can use to cover herself with handy… even if it were something unconventional. Bedsheets, curtains, tablecloths… there were certainly possibilities out there. Possibilities that she would take full advantage of, given opportunity. And she intended to make an opportunity if she could.

The problem was, obviously, getting around without being noticed, and therefore, stared at. Alys wasn’t by any means ashamed of her body, but at the same time, didn’t want to be made a spectacle of either. Still, sneaking around just wasn’t in her nature. She wasn’t a thief in the night, nor a wilting flower, shy to the attention of others.

She just really hated giving away a free show. At least the Pao Pao dancers got paid…

Well, she’d let the chips fall where they might. If someone spotted her and enjoyed undressing what little she was wearing with their eyes, she would just return the favor. Turnabout was fair play after all. Didn’t someone say, “Judged and be judged?” At any rate, being proactive beat the hell out of sitting around waiting for her clothes to be returned to her. So she would wander in search of… coverage. Hopefully finding something wouldn’t take long.

There were fewer chances of injury all around that way.
